2013 Metropolitan Premier Cup Day 4

The quarterfinal line-up of the 2013 Metropolitan under 19 Premier Cup was finalised on a busy day of entertaining football at Erica Park in Belhar on Saturday as the 25th edition of the tournament entered its knockout phase.

Bothasig will play Santos, Berea Albion were drawn to face Supersport United, while Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town meet in the pick of the round’s ties. Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns/Harmony academy complete the line-up.

After the group stages concluded in the morning session, a titanic round of 16 yielded the eight teams that will battle it out for a place in the semi-finals on Sunday.

Local club Bothasig emerged as genuine contenders for the title, overcoming a gallant Blue Downs Spurs outfit 3-1 after extra time. They were joined in the last eight by Gauteng visitors Berea Albion who outclassed Masidlale 3-0, while Santos managed to get through against Stars of Africa Academy by a single goal to nil. Bidvest Wits did well to come from behind to beat Glendene United 2-1, Ajax Cape Town held firm to oust ASD Academy 1-0 and Supersport United sent Morgenster United packing by two goals to nil. In the evening matches Kaizer Chiefs broke local hearts when they came out on top against Vasco Da Gama 1-0 and Sundowns eased their way into the next round with a 2-0 win over  Harmony Academy.

Once again, the support from the public was most impressive, with a crowd in excess of 6000 being rewarded for braving the blustery conditions. The day was filled with a feast of attacking, skilful football and plenty of goalmouth action as the finest u-19 talent in the country gave a display of passion commitment and no shortage of talent, which augers well for the future of the game in South Africa.

The action resumes on Sunday at 10h00 with the plate quarterfinals involving the teams that finished third in their respective groups. This will be followed by the winners’ quarterfinal round at 11h30. The winners’ semi-finals will get under way at 17h00 and 19h30 respectively after the mid-section and plate section semi-final round.
