South African Football Association (SAFA) President, Dr Danny Jordaan has wished Banyana Banyana well in their mission to qualify for the finals of the CAF African Women Championships against nemesis Nigeria.
Vera Pauw’s charges, who stormed into the penultimate stage with a swashbuckling 5-1 win over Algeria on Saturday, face Nigeria in the semi-finals of the 2014 CAF African Women’s Championship currently underway in Windhoek, Namibia.
The match will be played on Wednesday, 22 October 2014 at Sam Nujoma Stadium and will kick off at 15h00.
A win against Nigeria will see the South Africans automatically qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled for Canada next year.
“This team is the pride of the whole nation and I, on behalf of SAFA would want to wish them well. They have proven that they can really rise to the occasion when the going gets tough and hope they carry that momentum into Wednesday’s game. The comprehensive win against Algeria was a clear indication of what they can offer,” said Dr Jordaan.
“Nigeria are a very good side but I am confident that Vera Pauw and her charges will do the nation proud. What a better way to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup by beating Nigeria,” added the SAFA President.
Jordaan has also congratulated striker Portia Modise for reaching a historic 100-goal mark in the national team colours, saying the striker was already a living legend.
“This is by far one of the best achievements by any player in Banyana Banyana colours. As the Association, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Modise for the milestone she has reached. 100 goals and more than 100 caps for your country is no mean feat – she is an inspiration not only among her peers but for up-and-coming players. We hope she grows from strength to strength,” added Jordaan.
“Our congratulations also go to Mpumelelo Nyandeni who recently reached 100 caps for Banyana Banyana. Her experience will be valuable for the team. “
In another game, Cameroon take on Ivory Coast in the other semi-final clash scheduled for 20h00 at the same venue also on Wednesday.
